Gerald Eugene “Hambone” Hammond, 67, of Tacoma, Washington went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Friday, March 28, 2025. He was born May 18, 1957 to Robert Hammond Sr. and Lena Turner. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School and Central Washington University. Gerald served as a Juvenile Detention Officer for the Pierce County Juvenile Court for nearly 32 years, starting his career in August 1987. Remann Hall was more than just a job for him; it was a place where he genuinely sought to make a difference in the lives of youth. Throughout his time there, Gerald positively impacted countless generations of young people. He was affectionately known as the photo and video historian of “The Hall,” possessing a collection of pictures and videos dating back to the late ’80s and early ’90s. He cherished these memories and was very protective of them. In addition to his role, Gerald was well-known for organizing talent shows in the residential area, which brought laughter and unforgettable moments to everyone involved.
Gerald had a special gift for connecting with difficult young people and took joy in coaching them through challenging situations. His passing has left a significant void in our community, as he was deeply loved by both the young men and women as well as the staff.
His infectious laugh could bring joy to those around him. Last August, he organized a reunion at Remann Hall, bringing together approximately 40 past and present staff members. Despite his own illness, Gerald had an incredible ability to check in on and care for others.
Gerald was preceded in death by Robert Hammond (father) and Lena Turner (mother). Gerald loved everyone he met, and he lived to meet the needs of others! He loved his alma mater (Dunbar); his hometown Dayton, Ohio, and he represented them to the fullest. He was known for making and capturing memories (pictures/videos). Gerald was best known for his bigger than life laugh and bringing JOY to the world. Most importantly, Gerald loved Jesus!!! He had a heart of a lion, love for his family, and an insane work ethic.Gerald leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted daughter, Patricia Hammond; granddaughters, Mia Hammond and Pre’Ann Kinchen; great grandchildren, Za’Marion Mason, Jerany Mason and Juliet Scott ; brother, Robert Hammond (Carla); sisters, Deborah Sanders-Martin (Ray), Cynthia Jackson, Melody Amos (Carey), and Carol Hammond; and a host of nieces, nephews, adopted sons/daughters, and sincere friends that are too many to mention.
