Virginia Narcissi Brooks was born November 23rd, 1938 to Sylvester Brooks and Virginia Narcissi Horton in Philadelphia PA. She and her 7 siblings grew up in a loving Christian home where they attended the Church of Faith, in West Philadelphia.
She was educated in the Philadelphia school system. Although she didn’t graduate from high school, Virginia was always ambitious and later returned to get her GED as an adult. At the tender at of 15 she met and married Chester Jordan (who preceded her in death) and had her first child, Daniel “Danny” (who also preceded her in death) at 15, turning 16 the next day. From that 17-year union they had a total of 7 children, where they also raised them in a Christian home, attending the First Pentecostal Church, in South Philadelphia.
Virginia was a self-taught musician, playing the piano by ear to songs sung by the congregation and choir. Years later, Virginia joined the 2nd Shiloh Baptist Church in North Philadelphia, where she was the choir director and musician. She was a faithful member in this congregation for over 15 years.
In September of 1999, her youngest daughter Eileen finally convinced her to move to Tacoma Washington, with her oldest son Danny. In addition to getting herself and Danny settled, Virginia took on the role of raising one of her grandson’s, Tyreek the following year. Following Virginia’s move to Washington, Virginia later encouraged her daughter Regina, and one of her other sons to move and make Tacoma, Washington their home.
Virginia soon joined the church that her daughter Eileen attended, the New Jerusalem COGIC, where she became a faithful member. Her ability to play the older hymns were a welcomed gift to the church, during this time. Thereby, the Gospel Chorus was founded. Virginia loved entertaining, and soon her home became the place to be for Sunday dinner’s and during the holidays to many family and her children’s friends whom she lovingly embraced. One of her sons put it like this, “At one time or another you could go to Mom with anything, she always had your back! Always in loving memories of you Mama, your Ty Ty (Tyrone)”. As chronic illnesses took its toll, Virginia was moved to the 97th Ave Adult Family Home, where she receive excellent care with compassion and respect, until the Lord called her home on December 16th, 2024.
