Gwen was a very caring person starting at a young age. She loved music and dancing. She was on the drill team in high school. Gwen accepted Christ at an early age at Friendship Baptist Church. There she met Mrs. Hardaway, her Sunday school teacher, and developed a special bond. She considered her a mentor and a second mother.
A year after high school graduation, Gwen moved to Compton, California. While living with her sister Virginia, she met Michael Broom. They later married and had their son Jamar Broom on July 21, 1977. She took accounting courses at Compton Community College and worked in accounting and childcare. She joined Double Rock Baptist Church and was in the Young Adult choir. Gwen met Sidney Cartwright and had their son Cory Cartwright on August 12, 1982. Gwen and her sons were adopted into the Gibbs family.
Gwen loved spending time with her sons and they were involved in a wide range of activities. She kept her boys active in church. She encouraged her son Jamar to become a drummer for church and play in his high school band. Gwen simultaneously attended all her son Cory’s little league baseball games and Jamar’s band activities to cheer them along.
Gwen moved to Texas for business opportunities and later moved to Washington State to be nearer to her son Jamar, daughter-in-law Yana and grandchildren. She enjoyed being part of the village for her grandchildren and spending special time with them. They affectionately knew her as “Granny G.G.”. She enjoyed visiting family and friends in Colorado and California. She faithfully participated in numerous activities at Praise Chapel COGIC where she and her family attended church. Gwen always extended her caring hand to anyone in need and will be remembered as a true blessing to everyone.
