Larry (Woody) Darnell Woodruff—Woody fought hard but lost his short battle with cancer surrounded by his sons Darnell and Latroy on November 12, 2020. Woody lived a quiet, private life, but he was a great dad, brother, and friend to many.
Woody was born in Woodruff, South Carolina on December 13, 1949. He is preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Rev. Amzie L. and Connie Woodruff and his mother Hermina Young.
He graduated from Mt. Tahoma High School. Following high school, he joined the U. S. Navy and served for eight years. He worked for GTE (AT&T) for thirty years as a telephone technician and retired in 2018. For many years Woody enjoyed his part time work at Emerald Downs where he met many people. He helped in organizing the 3 on 3 basketball tournaments at Emerald Downs each year. He was president of the Pacific Northwest Basketball Association and ran tirelessly up and down high school basketball courts officiating games all over the state. He served as board president of the Ray Gibson Caballero Club and was a dedicated member. He attended Shiloh Baptist Church (Tacoma).
Woody is survived by his twin sons Darnell and Latroy Woodruff, his grandsons, Cody and Scott; his brother, Sidney Woodruff, his sisters Audrey Woodruff, Scarlett Watts, Phyllis Bowie (Lance), Sheila Pearson (Arthur), many nieces, nephews and friends.
⦁ Graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. (EST) in Woodruff, South Carolina. W.J. Gist Mortuary, 519 Workman Avenue, Woodruff, S.C.
